This is what dedicated customers look like.
This is what faithful Waterloo Farmer's Market vendors look like.
And this is what faithful 2nd Annual Waterloo Farmer's Market Pie-Baking Contestants look like!
The rain didn't keep this boy away from the Waterloo Farmer's Market 2nd Annual Pie-Baking Contest! Van entered the kids' category with his delicious Strawberry Raspberry pie and ended up receiving over-all Reserve Champion! Congratulations Van!
Beth Crave of Crave Brothers Farmstead Cheese had the very difficult job of being our pie-baking judge. John Spies (right) was our pie auctioneer and Harold Hann was his assistant. They did a fabulous job. Thanks guys!
We had Lemon Meringue, Peanut Butter, Apple, Strawberry, Triple Berry, and even Taco and Sauerkraut pies!
One of our younger contestants even put her name on her pie.
Our Grand Champion award went to Paula Lenius for her picture perfect Lemon Meringue Pie. Congratulations Paula!
The bakers received half of the auction proceeds and the Waterloo Carousel fund received the other half. The auction raised $135 for the Carousel fund, and lots of great memory making was had by all who attended.
Oh, and let's not forget the Farmer's Market-
This week at the Waterloo Farmer's Market in the Park - The summer is flying by - June is over already this week and it's time to start thinking about the Fourth of July! Come to the market and buy strawberry shortcake at 1776 prices! Also, our Waterloo Historical Society will be on hand with entertainment and displays from Waterloo of yesteryear. Also, kids don't miss our special bike and scooter red, white, and blue decorated parade! Bring your bike or scooter to the market at 5:30, decorate them and we'll have a parade around the market at 6:00.
See you at the there!
A big thank you to Kris Paape, who organizes the pie contest, and brought it to the Lake Mills Farmers' Market as well! (The Lake Mills FM pie contest is tomorrow - June 29 - at 5pm (judging) and 6pm (auction) if you have not had your fill of pies yet!)
ReplyDeleteKris has been going to the Stoughton Pie Contest every year for a very long time with her mother and sisters - a family tradition - and her many fans turn out for the auction part to get a pie made by Kris or one of her sisters - and many other talented pie bakers who come to the Stoughton event. It is through this fun tradition that Kris thought to bring a pie contest to Waterloo and Lake Mills - and we will always be grateful to Kris for that, as well as all of her hard work.
(The Stoughton Pie Contest is always the Saturday before the 4th of July - so that means that this year, it's this Saturday, July 2.)
